Who we are

Our aims and objectives

Epsomedical is a small, independent hospital group focussed on elective, that is not emergency, care.  We are not part of any NHS Trust or private hospital group, but have developed as a local provider for Surrey and SW London with units in Epsom and Cobham.  Our mission is to show that high standards are possible for NHS hospital care.  We set ourselves testing objectives which we endeavour to achieve, even when we know that patients are already happy with the service we provide.  Our guiding principle is that we are SETTING HIGHER EXPECTATIONS for patients and commissioners.

 

Integration

We carry out theatre procedures on a day case basis for patients referred to us, as well as providing a range of outpatient diagnostics.  Our consultants have links to local hospital trusts and patients can access the full range of diagnostics, therapies and support services provided by other hospitals where this is needed.  We work closely with local GPs, consultants and the wider NHS in Surrey to ensure continuity of care and smooth transfers where care is delivered by more than one provider. 

 

Outcomes

We believe that good care starts with good clinical practice, and we actively monitor clinical outcomes to ensure we achieve our aims.  We measure a broad range of performance statistics to ensure that patients are not kept waiting, that all information patients need is readily available, that all test results are available when required, that referring GPs are informed immediately of the outcome of attendances, and that cancellations are kept to a minimum.  The results are evident in the feedback from patients where we have consistently recorded scores of over 90 out of maximum possible score of 100.

 

Professionalism

Our staff are the key to achieving our ambitions.  Working in a small hospital requires flexibility and a wide range of individual competences.  We invest in staff through regular training and we support them through the relentless process of change that progress brings about.  The result has been that, of all the compliments and congratulations that the hospital has earned from patients, the great majority have paid tribute to the dedication and professionalism of our staff.

 

Value for Money

The NHS is our main customer, and we endeavour to make sure that it gets the best value for money.  Our prices are systematically cheaper than those of other local NHS hospitals and all activity we undertake is easily auditable to ensure that patient care pathways are efficiently managed.

Management Team

Tim Taylor

Managing Director

Tim had a background in the City and was involved a large number of projects around the world.  After leaving the City, he joined up with the partners of the Integrated Care Partnership GP practice in Epsom to develop secondary care services for NHS patients on the model of a day case hospital.  This led to the expansion of the already existing unit at the Old Cottage Hospital in Epsom and the development of the facility at Cobham which opened in 2006.
As Managing Director, he takes overall charge of the direction of the company and the management team

 
 

Dr Mark Jenkins

Medical Director
Mark trained in London at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals  and qualified as a GP in 2002.  Since then he has always practised in the Surrey Downs area and is currently a partner at the Oxshott Medical Practice.  He has a clinical interest in dermatology, and undertakes minor procedures in our units.
As Medical Director since 2014, he is responsible for the oversight of the clinical governance of the group and chairs the Medical Advisory Committee.  He is also responsible for managing our pool of clinicians, developing the clinical pathways we manage and services we offer
 

Jayne Sharp

Clinical Director
Jayne qualified as a registered nurse in 1983 at Charing Cross Hospital. She has subsequently gained extensive experience in acute hospitals in both the private and NHS sector.   She spent 15 years at Ashtead hospital where she helped set up the nursing team when the hospital opened.  Prior to joining Epsomedical in 2007 she was the nursing educator at Epsom & St Helier Trust for intensive care and high dependency.
 
As Clinical Director, she is responsible for the day to day management of our units, ensuring that services run and that standards are maintained.

Angela Pearce

Finance Director
Angela trained at Baker Tilly, Chartered Accountants for 10 years before becoming Finance Director and co-owner of an international electronics company for 13 years.
As Finance Director since May 2014, she ensures that all the systems are in place to allow our services to run smoothly

Helen Kelly

Compliance Manager

Helen trained as a nurse at the Middlesex Hospital, where she qualified in 1984.  She has worked in several NHS trusts, as well as in the private sector,   in a variety of clinical roles and specialities.

As Compliance Manager, Helen sets the standards we must work to and supervises the resulting training of all clinical staff.  It is her responsibility to investigate all incidents and complaints and ensure that, where failings are discovered, appropriate measures are put in place to prevent a recurrence.

Ian Williams

Customer Services Manager
Ian served for 27 years as an administrator in the British Army serving in many countries around the world.
Ian joined Epsomedical rather fittingly on Remembrance Day 2013 as Customer Services Manager.  He is responsible for all the administrative arrangements that support the running of our clinics and theatre lists.

Yes.  Our units were built specifically to cater for NHS requirements, and we are in contract with the NHS to provide services for its patients.  The units are not owned or managed by the NHS and we aim to give users the experience of visiting a private hospital. Our objective is to raise patient expectations as to the quality of service that the NHS can provide.
NHS patients have the same rights at our units as they would in any NHS hospital, and those rights are set out in the NHS Constitution, and more particularly in the Access Policy on this site.

Yes.  Our clinics are listed in the national NHS booking menu so anyone anywhere in the country being referred for the services we offer can ask to go to our units. All patients have this choice under the NHS Constitution.

Large district hospitals offer Accident & Emergency, Maternity, Medical Inpatients.  We do not offer these services but you can be referred in most specialties and we will carry out most of the diagnostics and surgery you may require in our units.  We have no overnight beds, so any surgery that may require overnight accommodation will have to be carried out at another local hospital, which may be NHS or private.  Patients who are to be anaesthetised for a procedure will be assessed beforehand to ensure they are fit for the procedure on our site.

Outpatient services at Epsom are split between the Old Cottage Hospital, Alexandra Road and the Ebbisham centre in the High Street.  All surgery at Epsom is carried out at the old Cottage Hospital.  Some services, like cardiology and respiratory medicine are not available at Epsom.  In all other cases patients can decide which unit to visit.  The waiting times for each unit are shown by service on this website.

There are some 60 different consultants practising at our units.  Most of them are attached to one of the local NHS Trusts, and we collaborate with the Trusts to make sure that patients have ready access to all the diagnostics and procedures they might require.  A few are independent clinicians working mostly at our units.  A full list of consultants is available on the website.

Yes.  All the services we offer to NHS patients are also available for those electing to pay.
